Project>Soundwave proudly presents the first show of the
Soundwave>Series 2nd season. Artists from Bay Areas
experimental music scene converge to improvise scores for
an unusual array of films they have never seen before. This
is the 1st in a series of events exploring SURROUND>SOUND
in June/July at ATA, The LAB and Luggage Store Gallery.
(San Francisco, USA) Two years after the launch of
the SOUNDWAVE>SERIES, MEDIATE NETWORK is proud to announce
the production of its 2nd Edition in June and July 2006 with
the theme of SURROUND>SOUND. More ambitious
in scope, the multi-venue series invites contemporary artists
and musicians to push boundaries of sound and music and envelope
audiences in a sonically astonishing experience.
Artist works involve gourds as speakers, visual/audio
improvisation, theatre reinterpretation, and ice and tunnels
in an environment where audiences will have sonic experiences
like never before, says curator and producer Alan So.
SURROUND>SOUND intends to blow away the general publics
preconceived notions of how they experience sound. This will
be a fascinating foray into the contemporary sound art scene,
with the hope that audiences come away stunned and inspired
at the same time.
Artists, including prominent Bay Area sound artist Matt Davignon,
LA artist Albert Ortega and Canadian musician/programmer Stefan
Smulovitz, will be performing at leading art institutions
in San Francisco beginning with LIVE PLAY on June 9 at Artists
Television Access (ATA), then SOUNDSPACE at The LAB for 2
nights on July 7-8 and finally I AM SOUND at The Luggage Store
Gallery New Music Series on July 20. Go to www.projectsoundwave.com/series
for full performance details and schedule.
Using a multi-venue format, the Soundwave>Series connects
these innovative works on sound to diverse audiences by creating
an open forum to explore sound making and its connections
to the human experience. The Soundwave>Series is a grassroots
not-for-profit and artist-centered initiative, which gratefully
relies on community support. Ticket prices will run from $6-$10
sliding scale in support of event production and series artists.
The Soundwave>Series is part of Project>Soundwave (www.projectsoundwave.com),
a MEDIATE-initiated project dedicated to the exploration of
sound and music with the production of CDs, exhibitions, and
live events from contemporary artists across the sound spectrum.

April 19, 2005 BBC Features Project>Soundwave
(London, United Kingdom) Project>Soundwave
debuts across the pond this Friday
April 22 when the BBC Radio 3 program "Mixing
It" features "Sound Collage 1998-2002"

"Mixing It" is UK's preeminent new
music program broadcast worldwide which has long been celebrated
as a bastion of experimental music radio. Courageous and innovative,
"Mixing It" is music without limits, covering a
wide range of styles, including left-field areas of modern
classical, dance, rock and world music.
"Sound Collage 1998-2002" is a sewn-together chronological
journal of sounds found through various objects and machines
collected at thrift stores and coaxed throughout a five-year
period by Tom Thayer, a Mulfreesboro, Tennesse-based artist.
Working with canvas, paper, electronics, performance and sound,
Tom has exhibited across the United States including the Museum
of Contemporary Art in Chicago and Soundwave>Series events
in San Francisco and Oakland. He is currently a professor
at Middle Tennessee State University and recording his debut
CD "Songs of Animal Land".
Project>Soundwave has already been making waves in North
America being featured on New York City's WNYC "New
Sounds", Canada's CBC Radio 2 "Brave
New Waves", and many college/independent radio including
KKUP (Cupertino),
KZSU
(Stanford), WLUW
(Chicago), WMBR
(MIT).
The SF Examiner calls Project>Soundwave "...a breathtaking
assortment of experimental sounds, noises and rhythms,...
that approach sound from a uniquely artistic perspective...
testing the limits of sound's raw emotional capability."
East Bay Express reviews it as "...avant-garde sound
artists using everything from loops to found objects to electronic
permutation, to push the frontiers of what we call "music"
far beyond what we're accustomed to hearing."
