<strong>Silent Auction</strong><br />
Bidding in the silent auction is easy. Come by for happy hour drinks and register early at 6:30pm and get first dibs to bid on art by incredible artists! Or come by after dinner at 8:30pm to start a final bidding war. Last name standing wins at 9pm! We process all transactions event night with cash, credit card and checks. Stay till the end and take your new art home that night or we can contact you are the winner and arrange for pickup at a later date.<br />

All proceeds go towards the creation of the Soundwave ((5)) Festival scheduled for the summer of 2012.  Other monetary donations can be made at the event (fully-tax-deductible) or through Soundwave&#8217;s Kickstarter website (coming soon!).<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The next season of Soundwave will explore our sonic connections to the human condition. For HUMANITIES, Soundwave seeks artists, composers and musicians to investigate our human experience, and examine the future of our human constructs, cultures and rituals through sound.</p>
<p>.</p>
<p>From Season 4’s outward examination of the environment to Season 5’s inward reflection of our own being and existence, the 2012 festival attempts to voice what makes us human in the backdrop of the MesoAmerican Long Count Calendar “Rebirth” and the ensuing mythologies and theories.</p>
<p>.</p>
<p>Soundwave seeks experience-driven performances that reinterpret the connections between sound and our human experience through its instrumentation, concept, visual collaboration, installation, audience interaction, or production by local and international sound and media artists, technologists, designers, musicians, and composers.</p>
<h3><strong>the questions</strong></h3>
<p>How can the human body, mind and spirit affect sound? What are the future sonic traditions of our cultures (ethnic, social, community)? How will technology affect our humanity and our sonic experience and traditions? What does it means to be human? (How we live, where we come from, how we think, and how we construct existence (physical, emotional, spiritual)). How will we construct our humanness (ideas about higher power/purpose, myths, legends, cultures and traditions, human consciousness, metaphysical constructs, human identity, human exchange, and our relation to the world)? How do we measure existence now and in the future? What does evolution look like/sound like for the self, body, mind/intellect, and the world?</p>
<h3><strong>concepts to consider</strong></h3>
<p>electric body impulses; mind-manipulated sound technologies and recordings; body sonics; body instrumentation; brain waves to soundwaves; re-imaginations of ritual acoustics, spiritual, cultural, social acoustics, sonic legends, myths, folklore and fables; new concepts of the Griots, Bards, &amp; Minstrals; hybridized traditions/cultures; imagined utopias; evolutions, regeneration, rebirth, and revolutions; how the world came to be in present form/ future form; supernatural heroes, gods, shamans; magic, illusions and faith; re-imagination and re-interpretations of existence; regenerations and cycles of life; re-interpretation of the home/soul/heart; new ways of experiencing human instinct and desire; human-enabled sonic technologies; dance collaborations, film collaborations, theatrics, and other artist imaginations.</p>
<h3><strong>season 5 mission</strong></h3>
<p>HUMANITIES hopes to engage artists and audiences with new voices exploring / celebrating / challenging human existence, and re-inventing a world of human possibility. It hopes to inspire thought and action while showcasing sound’s inherent connection to our physical and spiritual bodies and innovative artistic voices for the ‘rebirth’ of our humanity.</p>

<p><strong><em>Dates and Venues:</em></strong> Soundwave will take place on various dates between July and September 2012 at various venues in San Francisco. We work with the invited artist to schedule available dates, as well as venues appropriate for their work. Typically, specific dates and venues are confirmed three months in advance.</p>
<p>.</p>
<p><strong><em>Artist Fees:</em></strong> Fees to performing artists are modest. Amount is dependent on grant awards and fundraising currently in process. Typically, fees are confirmed three months in advance of performance date.</p>
<p>.</p>
<p><strong><em>Accommodations:</em></strong> We are unable to offer accommodation fees for international artists and American artists outside of the Bay Area. We can offer housing, with limited availability, in private homes of friendly and enthusiastic friends of Soundwave to sleep and store belongings.</p>
<p>.</p>
<p><strong><em>Travel:</em> </strong>We invite all artists to submit proposals, but we are unable to offer financial assistance to cover travel costs for those outside the Bay Area. We ask our international artists and American artists outside of the Bay Area to apply for travel funding through their national arts councils and private foundations in their home country (ie. Canadian Artists – Canada Council for the Arts). <strong><em>We will need to be notified of your travel award or notification of self-travel by March 01, 2012 or the invitation will be rescinded.</em></strong> We do occasionally apply for grants specifically for our International artists and American artists outside the Bay Area. Artists that apply early will have better access to these grants. These grants, however, would not be enough to offset travel and accommodation costs, so we encourage those to continue to apply for travel grants.</p>
<p>.</p>
<p><strong><em>Jury:</em></strong> A curatorial committee made up of MEDIATE directors and creative professionals from diverse sonic and artistic backgrounds will rigorously jury proposals based on congruity of theme, ingenuity of project, diversity of artists’ perspective, and feasibility of production.</p>
<h3><strong>proposal guidelines</strong></h3>
<p><strong> All proposals MUST include:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Your artistic resume and website (including past performances, exhibitions, commissions, discography, videography)</li>
<li>A concise project description limited to 500 words. Indicate whether this is a completed project, a work-in-progress or yet to be realized, as well as, the performance duration of your work (most performances are limited to 20-30 minutes long with merited exceptions). Please indicated if it is time specific so we may have the ability to accommodate. Supply dates of availability for performance in San Francisco, if any.</li>
<li>3 past works you wish to showcase in support of your proposal (documentation in the form of recordings, images, video, etc.)</li>
<li>A detailed list of your technical needs and space requirements</li>
<li>A 100-200 word typed bio of quality for publication in press materials</li>
<li>High resolution photograph(s) of yourself, your group and/or your work for press materials. Digital images must be a minimum of 8X10 at 300 dpi. In Jpeg or Tiff format with the extension attached (.jpg or .tif). Do not embed photographs in Word or any other program.</li>
<li>Any support materials such as press articles, CDs, MP3s, videos, documentation, diagrams that will strengthen and enhance your proposal.</li>
<li>Artists outside Bay Area/International Artists: MUST also provide information of how they will fund their travel (specify self-travel or application to travel grants), and whether they can attend in the event travel assistance is unsuccessful. Your ability to be self-sufficient in travel is favorable, however it will not strengthen/weaken the merits of your proposal.</li>

<h3><strong>about soundwave</strong></h3>
<p>Soundwave is MEDIATE’s acclaimed biennial festival of innovative sound, art and music. Soundwave is a multi-venue and multi-date sound performance series happening over the span of two months every two years in San Francisco USA. Each season investigates a new idea in sound and invites diverse multidisciplinary artists and musicians to explore the season’s theme in new and innovative directions. Soundwave has completed four successful seasons: Season 4’s GREEN SOUND in 2010, Season 3’s MOVE&gt;SOUND in 2008, Season 2’s SURROUND&gt;SOUND in 2006 and Season 1’s FREE&gt;SOUND in 2004. Created by MEDIATE founder and artistic director Alan So, Soundwave explores the boundaries of how we see sound, language and music. It is a project dedicated to challenge and inspire artists and audiences to look deeper into the sound medium and discover new connections to sound making and the sound experience. On September 23, sound artists <a href="http://horaflora.blogspot.%e2%80%8bcom/" target="_blank">HoraFlora</a> &amp; Shane Myrbeck explore the depths of perception by developing  fictionalized sonic  environments using experimental techniques to  create, manipulate and  spatialize sound. SoundLab also recreates  excerpts of the stunning  performances at <a href="http://www.nps.gov/goga/historyculture/battery-townsley.htm">Battery Townsley</a> by <a href="http://greggkowalsky.net/">Gregg Kowalsky</a>, and <a href="http://www.heule.us/">Jacob Felix  Heule</a> &amp; <a href="http://www.myspace.com/kan%E2%80%8Bokonishi" target="_blank">Kanoko Nishi</a> from last season’s Soundwave ((4)). Oakland-based  duo Gregg Kowalsky and Marielle Jakobsons create a  site-specific  performance in the Battery&#8217;s gunwell with Trevor  Montgomery (acoustic  bass) and Michael Elrod (tanpura). They share  internationally-spanning solo  careers as creative practitioners with a  solid foundation in drone  music composition and performance. However,  it is a mutual love for  classical Indian music and Bitches Brew that  resulted in their  psychedelic, trance-inducing collaboration known as <a href="http://www.datepalmsofpsalms.com/">Date Palms</a>.  Their music  has been called &#8220;a strange, yet fantastic fusing of  Eastern style raga  drones, and hypnotic Spacemen 3 style bass buzz,  almost like some sort  of slowcore, spacerock, dronedrift that is  abstract and minimal.&#8221;</h5>

<h5>M. MARA-ANN&#8217;S SUGAR PINE TESLA<br />
<a href="http://www.medusa.org/">Sugar  Pine Tesla</a> is M. Mara-Ann&#8217;s newest composition for voice and movement,  featuring  Sarah-Elena Palmer (voice), Julie Binkley (dance), Caroline  Penwarden  (voice), Sonsherée Giles (dance), Jen Harper (voice), Vanessa   Beggs-Skacel (voice), Alexa Hall (voice), M. Mara-Ann (voice). Sugar   Pine Tesla will activate the sonic, visual and constructive aspects of   the concrete and steel structure to generate an aural and visual   surround sound, multi-directional, moving, shifting, reverberating   intermedia work. M. Mara Ann is a vocalist, writer and performance   artist that employs improvised music, dance, text, video and theater to   explore topics of the environment and currently producing the  intermedia  performance series &#8216;The Containment Scenario Project&#8217;.</h5>

<h5>EDWARD SCHOCKER<br />
In  the bellies of the battery fortification, composer <a href="http://edwardschocker.com/">Edward Schocker</a> creates a resonant performance with glass and sho (Japanese wind   instrument), featuring musicians Adam Fong (double bass), Suki O&#8217;Kane   (bass drum) and Taka Oda (voice). Schocker&#8217;s work is a unique mixture   of alternate tuning systems and unique instruments, combined with   theater/opera. He has collaborated with many dancers, artists and   writers and his music has been performed in numerous countries   throughout the world.</h5>

<p><strong>Why is ME&#8217;DI.ATE fundraising now? You didn&#8217;t have to raise money before.</strong></p>
<p>Well, actually we did need to. We just never had the means and resources to put on specific events to do it.  For over 10 years, ME&#8217;DI.ATE and its projects, such as the Soundwave Festival, existed because it was a labor of love and a strong belief the world needs to experience this inspiring work from these innovative artists. Thousands of hours of volunteer time were poured into developing and presenting exhibitions and events and tens of thousands of dollars were spent of our personal savings to pay for venues, equipment, materials and artists. We are extremely fortunate that you have responded with great enthusiasm to our projects. None of us are wealthy and have multiple jobs just to make ends meet, however, we are now fortunate as a non-profit entity to be able to have a platform to create fundraising events.</p>
<p>.</p>
<p><strong>Why not get the money from grants and foundations?</strong></p>
<p>Grant bodies insist on having other means of revenue and public support that shows voracity of our organization and our projects before they will consider giving any money. In other words, without your support, we can&#8217;t receive support from grant bodies. While we have been fortunate to have skilled volunteers to write grants and receive grant awards since 2008, most foundations are unable to give you the amount you request, have limits on the amount they can give, restrict where the funds are spent, and/or require you to raise the money elsewhere as well.</p>

<p><strong>Where does the money go?</strong></p>
<p>The money raised (after fundraising production expenses) will support the development of our innovative programming and keep our non-profit running for another year. This unrestricted funding allows us to use the funds where it is needed the greatest including production, material and equipment needs, office<strong> </strong>rental<strong>, </strong>honorariums for artists and staff for their tireless work, office supplies, non-profit government fees,  web hosting and maintenance fees, insurance fees and much more. All this enables us to continue having affordable ticket prices for our 2012 season.</p>

<p><strong>Why should I become a sponsor?</strong></p>
<p>Due to the intimate nature of our events, even selling out tickets to the PLAYBACK series at the general ticket price of $20 would only raise half of our $10,000 need. If you are able to afford more, please consider becoming a sponsor and receive special gifts and benefits as well as a tax-deduction for your generosity.<strong> </strong></p>

<p><strong>Why does the public need to support ME&#8217;DI.ATE? Shouldn&#8217;t you be able to survive through ticket sales like any other business?</strong></p>
<p>ME&#8217;DI.ATE&#8217;s mission is to present new innovative and experiential work as a public benefit to inspire, educate and entertain audiences  with new ideas and support underrepresented artists and musicians from the local and global experimental art and music scene. Like all non-profit arts organizations, its business is not to make money, but provide cultural value to the community. The costs of productions are usually 10x more than prices of tickets and underwritten by grants, public donors and sponsors. <p>As a non-profit, we are restricted by the government to turn a profit. Every cent must go to the creation and presentation of innovative work. Like most non-profits, and more specifically, art organizations, there is never enough money to truly and effectively support the work that we do. Along with our board, we set reasonable attainable annual budget to guide us what is possible for the year. Every additional funding beyond our budget is marked to enable us to raise artist fees, keep ticket prices low, purchase much need equipment or supplies on our waiting list, or operate another month in our office.<strong><br />

<p>As a fundraising event, we had to raise prices to enable us a shot at attaining our fundraising goal of $10,000. This will help us keep ticket prices affordable &#8211; and lower than these fundraising events &#8211; even some free events for our next season in 2012.<strong><br />

It will include managing volunteer photographers, editors and videographers, managing video, photo materials and equipment, and distributing/archiving the work. This position involves independent work with writing, phone calls and emails.<br />

•	Photographing, videographing and video editing footage from our productions<br />
•	Managing documentation equipment supplies<br />

Its incorporation comes almost 13 years after its founding and a nine year presence in the Bay Area. This new chapter in ME’DI.ATE’s history enables it to better serve the Bay Area, expand its innovative programming, and increase capacity for artists, audiences, and funding opportunities with this new stronger organizational foundation.</p>

<p>ME’DI.ATE has assembled an experienced Board of Directors with backgrounds in creative and business management to guide the organization, and an accomplished Board of Advisors that will help expand its knowledge base, and build more connections between artistic, educational and local communities.
